Cellar Dwellers

Cellar Dweller is the name of our monthly email-out. We've left all the old ones here so you can get an idea of wines we've had in the past, some of these may still be available.....doubtful, but possible!

What's in the Cellar?

Our cellars are divided into 3 parts:

The Reds to Drink Cellar: This cellar is for pre 1998 wines, prices vary from $20.00 to....?

The "Behind the Gate" Cellar: This is for those gems from Three Rivers, Rockford, Penfolds, Henschke, Mosswood, E&E, Jim Barry Armagh, etc

The "Big Cellar": Now devoted to mainly tastings it does still hold some gems that are kept for "those in the know"

Join our mailing list to be in "The Know"

Please note this list is ONLY wines in the above Cellars it does not include all wines in the store.

For any specific requests or questions please email us

A REAL Wine Cellar not just a wine seller!

As usual we at The Ed live up to our reputation of not bugging our customers over the festive period or most other times of the year for that matter!
We do firmly believe if you have nothing to say…….don’t! Well now we have a few things that need to be mentioned…………

By the way the GREAT Shiraz Challenge will be held on June 24th June 2007.

Our main bit of news concerns James March. James has left the building, lost his ED, resigned, moved on to “better” things!
After a lot of searching we found Phil Hardy, Phil comes with a great track record, great palate, great sense of humour too!
We’re sure he will fit into the team and teach us all a thing or two.

Here are some gems we found and some have just landed.

2004 Tapanappa Cabernet Shiraz $75.00
“Whalebone Vineyard Cabernet Shiraz 2004 - 95 points. Included in the top 5 Cabernet Shiraz blends of the year.
"Medium red-purple, not star-bright; a very attractive mix of sweet red and black fruits with seamless quality oak and fine, ripe tannins."
James Halliday. Australian Wine Companion 2007 Edition.

2004 Lunar Shiraz $25.00
"Although big, backstrapping, and mouthstaining, the 2004 Shiraz keeps everything in balance. Its dense purple color is accompanied by supple tannin, low acidity, and beautifully pure blackberry and cassis fruit. It should drink well for 7-8 years."
91 Points Robert Parker Wine Advocate #167 (Oct 2006)
We just LOVE this wine, in fact we bought the whole Australian allocation and the Cabernet too!
91 points for a first attempt. We reckon Corey is a winemaker to watch.

2004 Viking Grand Shiraz $30.00 – Barossa Valley
A touch by of magic by Rolf Binder.
“Deep colour; immensely powerful and concentrated, awash with black fruits, spice and dark chocolate, which have in turn consumed the oak; 50-year-old dry-grown vines. Cork. 14.5% alc. rating 93 drink 2019” James Halliday. Australian Wine Companion 2007 Edition.

2004 Cloudy Bay Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc 2004 $45.00|
We get a bit excited about a good wood aged Sauvignon Blanc …
In recent years, Cloudy bay Te Koko has emerged as a sort of alter ego to the standard wine. Light years away from the conventional idea of Marlborough sauvignon, it's a super-complex wine…..” The Age, Epicure Uncorked, Australia - Ralph Kyte-Powell - 28 March 2006

2004 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay $80.00
Following a review of 19 vintages of "Art Series" Chardonnays, James Halliday concluded "This is Australia's greatest Chardonnay and one of the great wines of the world"
2004 follows a fine tradition of elegant Chardonnay from one of Australia’s icon Chardonnay producers.

2005 Kaesler The Bogan Shiraz $50.00
96 big ones by Robert Parker in October 2006. He writes “It is full bodied and powerful with fabulous purtity and texture as well as a blockbuster finish. This is a classic example of Barossa Shiraz at it’s finest”

Kilikanoon Super Six Pack $650.00
VERY LIMITED STOCK!

“The Super Six pack is one bottle each of our best Shiraz, representing the purest expression of “terroir” from our Estate vineyards in the Clare Valley, Barossa Valley and McLaren Vale, three of the world’s finest Shiraz-growing regions. One bottle each of the following wines from the acclaimed 2004 vintage makes up this exclusive set of wines, packaged in an attractive wooden case containing a certificate signed by Kevin Mitchell.
(please note the wooden boxes are not available for overseas deliveries)

“Attunga Vineyard 1865” Clare Valley Shiraz- the first release by Kilikanoon of a single vineyard Clare Valley Shiraz, made from some of Australia’s oldest living vines, planted ca 1865, before the phylloxera scourge which decimated the vines of Europe. We believe these to be the Clare Valley’s oldest living vines.

“R” Reserve Barossa Valley Shiraz- the finest selection from our Green’s and Crowhurst Vineyards in Bethany and Greenock in the Barossa Valley. Previous vintages have been described as “a South Australian classic” and rated at up to 98+ points by Robert Parker and 95 points by James Halliday.

“Green’s Reserve” Barossa Valley Shiraz
- a single vineyard selection from dry grown old vines from our Green’s vineyard in the Barossa Valley- Previous vintages have been described as “classic Barossa Shiraz to drink over the next several decades” and rated at up to 97 points by Robert Parker and 96 points and selected in “Best of the Best” by James Halliday.

“Oracle” Clare Valley Shiraz- Kilikanoon’s flagship, with an extraordinary track record since its first vintage in 1998. Awards and accolades from previous vintages include: Best Shiraz International Wines and Spirits Competition London 2004, Best Red Wine of the Show Clare Valley Show 2001, 98 points Robert Parker, 96 points James Halliday, only wine to wine three consecutive Gold Medals at the annual Great Australian Shiraz Challenge etc.

“M” Reserve Mclaren Vale Shiraz- Sourced from very old, dry-grown Mclaren Vale vineyards and already attracting reviews like “Australian Shiraz at its biggest, richest, and most intense” 95 points Robert Parker, from its first vintage in 2003.

“Covenant” Clare Valley Shiraz- Sibling to the Oracle, and from the same estate owned vineyards, planted 45 years ago and lovingly tended to this day by Mort Mitchell, Kevin’s father. Equally impressive track record including an amazing three trophies including Best Wine of the Show at its first outing at the 2002 Clare Valley Show”.

2004 Kilikanoon Oracle $65.00
Part of the “Super Six Pack” but we do have some independent stocks.
“The dense purple-colored 2004 Shiraz Oracle ratchets up the fruit and glycerin levels, yet remains pure, elegant, and well-balanced. It offers beautiful aromas of blueberries, blackberries, acacia flowers, and spicy oak. Full-bodied, powerful, cleanly textured, long, and heady, I would not be surprised to see it evolve for 15-20 years. 97 Points.” Robert Parker Wine Advocate #167 (Oct 2006)

2002 Pizzini Coronamento Nebbiolo $100.00
When we had Fred Pizzini in the Cellar showing us his wines this was the absolute stand out wine. All the others are GREAT but this is THE wine…..here’s what a few of the people in the know have said……………

“This wine will become known as an Australian classic. In 15 years time you will hear about it, and wish that you had shelled out for some. It has been meticulously put together, and tastes magnificent: like tea leaves, like licorice, like leather, like malt, like burnt coffee, like heaven. It has a lot of tannin, every ounce of it ripe. It has a lot of acidity, every drop of it completely part of the wine. It has length. This wine was so good, it made me redefine the paramaters of what I thought was possible. It's price, while high, should be compared with world nebbiolo prices - because this wine deserves to be ranked among them. This is staggeringly good. Drink: 2009-2018. 96 points.” Campbell Mattinson Winefront Monthly January 2007
…surely there is an element of magic, blindingly good Reserve Nebbiolo that will force many people to revise their opinions about Nebbiolo in Australia.
Huon Hooke Gourmet Traveller Wine Magazine June/July 2006
Lately Australia has “arrived” as a Nebbiolo producer. This superb wine, half the price of great Italians, shows similar seductive varietal character. Its complex, powerful, slowly evolving personality shows notes of tar, dry herb and spice, mint and earth, and the succulent yet savoury palate is full-bodied, grippy, long and majestic. Drink over 12 years. FIVE STARS. Ralph Kyte-Powell The Age Epicure January 16th 2007

1996 Dom Perignon Rose $625.00
“The 1996 vintage has all the inimitable traits of Dom Pérignon Rosé. It has the lightheartedness, vivacity and vibrancy of the Pinot Noir grape while still maintaining the balance between the Chardonnay and Pinot Noir that is unique to the Dom Pérignon style. This play of contrasts reaches such a degree of density and sophistication that it achieves a sublime harmony.
“What is remarkable about this vintage,” says Richard Geoffroy, Dom Pérignon Chef de Cave, “is that the boldness and authority that characterize the vintage are tempered. A subtle play is established between the pronounced, impetuous character of the 1996 vintage and the Dom Pérignon style that tames it.”

Tasting Notes
Color. Coppery pink with light orange highlights.
On the nose. The aroma of malt rapidly leads into that of well-ripened fruit, nectarine and wild strawberries, complemented by smoky, peaty accents.
On the palate. In a paradox that typifies the vintage, concentration and movement vie each other with an affirmation of boldness and authority. The tastes progress with strength – tense, radiant and sharp. The finish is firm, underscored with a slightly vanilla-spicy note.
The 1996 harvest. The year was full of contrasts. The summer weather was capricious and the wet periods did not compensate for the early lack of rain. In the end, it was the periods of high heat in the months preceding the harvest (the start of which was spread from September 16 to October 1) that led to the exceptional maturity of the harvest, marked by a rare balance of power and acidity.
Rarity. Dom Pérignon Rosé is not the rule, it is the exception. It is always sold in limited numbers because the qualities of the Pinot Noir grapes that the Dom Pérignon style requires are truly exceptional as well. This means that each Dom Pérignon Rosé vintage shares a gene that dictates the very essence of luxury: the rarity of excellence.”

2005 Glaetzer Amon Ra Shiraz
2005 Glaetzer Godolphin Shiraz Cabernet
2005 Kalleske Greenock Shiraz

2003 Mitolo Reiver Shiraz $75.00
We were offered a wee bit of the above from a secondary source and we couldn’t resist, this is EXTREMELY LIMITED!
“The 2003 Shiraz Reiver is a 100% Shiraz from the Greenock region of Barossa cropped at 1.2 tons of fruit per acre, and aged 18 months in primarily new French barrels and small foudres. Winemaker Ben Glaetzer has fashioned an opaque purple-colored offering displaying a gorgeous bouquet of crushed rocks, violets, and blueberries that is reminiscent of the prodigious 1990 St.-Emilion, Beausejour-Duffau. It possesses a terrific texture, impressive purity, a long finish, and atypically low alcohol (14%) for such ripeness and intensity.” 95 -99 Points Robert Parker Wine Advocate #155 October 2004

Richard Hennessy Cognac $1500.00
Isn’t it amazing what the Irish can do………………
In 1765, Irish aristocrat Richard Hennessy, who had been serving in the French forces, founded an eaux-de-vie trading business in Cognac.
Richard Hennessy Cognac is made up of more than 100 of the most exceptional eaux-de-vie, aged up to 200 years. Each one has been selected for its unique qualities. The finesse of the finished cognac is a testament to years spent slowly maturing in oak barrels.

Tasting notes
Balanced and complex, the rich bouquet slowly releases a succession of aromas that have built up over the years: vanilla, spices, pepper and delicately fragrant flowers. In the mouth, the infinitely refined texture reveals an extraordinary palette of flavors that blends spices, the subtle essence of ripe fruit and the finesse of oak.

Herradura Tequila

Herradura tequilas have just landed on Australian shores! No doubt many of us have had a bruising encounter or two with this much maligned spirit some point in our lives, however Herradura is an astonishingly pleasant surprise. Felix recently had the opportunity to try the range with the visiting master distiller, and was blown away by the delicately complex flavours. Herradura has been distilling for over 130 years, it's tequilas are made from 100% agave (a pineapple-like plant), and it is the only spirit to be able to claim a natural making process, using indigenous yeasts and no other additions such as artificial colours.

Silver $67
Very light amber colour, with bouquet of cooked agave combined with herbal and wood notes. Palate is generous and oily, with lively vegetal, sweet agave and tangy citrus tones. A delicate finish.

Reposada $76
Herradura was the first distillery to age a tequila in barrels and create the reposada style- this receives 11 months in oak. Intense amber colour with nose of cooked agave, cinnamon, vanilla and wood. Generous and silky palate balancing the liveliness of fresh agave with soft vanilla.

Anejo $88
Two years in white oak barrels give this a darker amber colour and pronounced notes of cinnamon and butter on the bouquet. Superb on the palate, creamy and soft with an oiliness evidenced by its great 'legs' (in the glass)

We thought this was a “real find” when we found it a few months ago!!!

2002 Wolf Blass Platinum Shiraz @ $150.00
“Yes, it is an awful lot of money, but this is Barossa Shiraz is not only one of the best wines I’ve tasted for ages, it also takes big company flagships in a great new direction: rather than relying on power and oak for effect, its subtle, complex, multi-layered, floral, perfumed, intense…..adjectives just come tumbling out” Max Allen Weekend Australian 16-17 July 2005

“….a concentrated mix of cherry and blackcurrant with complex touches of new shoe leather, briar and spice, its full-bodied and long with a savoury grainy feel.
Ageing:3 to 15 years”

Ralph Kyte-Powell Epicure Uncorked. The Age 9th August 2005

2002 Moss Wood Cabernet @ $85.00
“On the nose the Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon has fresh berry fruit aromas of raspberry, mulberry and redcurrant that combine with cherry, spicy oak and cedar with leaf overtones. There are also hints of coffee bean, chocolate and eucalypt.

The theme of lively fruit characters continues on the palate with lifted mulberry and redcurrant fruit flavours combining with full to medium body, giving quite long and generous depth and texture. The tannin structure is firm, combining grape and oak tannins that give weight and structure to the mid and back palate. The finish is soft spicy and smoky oak flavours.
Overall, the wine has firm acid and tannin which is balanced by reasonable fruit characters that belie the cool nature of the season. Wines of a similar style in the past include the 1982 and 1993 vintages, both of which have continued to age well, and on that basis the 2002 has good aging potential. Recommended cellaring time is 15 years, with a minimum of 10 years.”
www.mosswood.com.au

From The Cellar:

Tim Adams The Aberfeldy Shiraz, all are $45.00 per bottle

As you may or may not know we pride ourselves in actually cellaring wine in our cellar. We recently found some Tim Adams Abderfeldy Shiraz from 1999 to 2002 then we came across an article in Divine Magazine March/May 2005 which had a vertical tasting of the Aberfeldy. Pity we have only 4 vintages available!

"1999:Much more aromatic and lifted than the 98. The inky fruit is similarly concentrated but there is a greater degree of restraint and structure which results in a finer, more elegant wine. And while the finish is not as long as the 98, compared with other vintages it is still pretty impressive.

2000: Lacklustre nose and quite developed for its age; coffee, leather, brown spices, tar and baked earth. Tastes better than it smells and shows good weight and structure, but it lacks the polish of other vintages. Given how it has developed it is a wine to drink sooner rather than later.

2001: A super intense wine crammed to the gills with black fruit, clove and choc-mint. Great slinky mouthfeel - slides across the tongue with fabulous grace to a warming, spicy finish. The hardly noticable tannins compliment the bright acidity and saturated fruit brilliantly. All in all this is a very smart wine indeed that has years in front of it.

2002: The 02 Aberfeldy is laden with spicy florals, vanilla, cardamon, liquouice and sweet/sour red fruit. The palate ripples with well defined saturated fruit, spicy acidity and those oh-so- familiar Aberfeldy fine tannins. At two years of age it has come together brilliantly and shows great balance as well as elegance- theres nothing clumsy or awkward; its sheer class all the way. One of those freaky wines that's dazzling to drink right from the word go. Will age magnificently for a decade. My top wine in the tasting"
Andrew Wood. Divine Food & Wine March/ May 2005

Wendouree

Wendouree
Wendouree
"The Wendouree vineyards were planted in 1893 on the easterly ridge of the Clare Valley - essentially a corrugation of hills and gullies that run in a north-south direction. The Wendouree Shiraz has become one of Australia's iconic wines. It is profoundly individual. Regardless of point of view, these wines are always memorable. Virtually the entire production of Wendouree was sold in bulk or in unlabelled bottles until the 1950s. Roly Birks used to travel around central South Australia selling hogsheads off the back of a truck. Unlike many other wine producers taking advantage of the boom in Australian wine, Wendouree has chosen to remain true to its origins. It is, for all intents and purposes, a living museum making old fashioned, wondrous wines."

2000 Henrys Drive Cabernet

"Readers looking for a sexy, succulent Cabernet fruit bomb will enjoy the 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon. Made from young vines, this gorgeous, deliciously fruity effort reveals plenty of glycerin, body, and depth without a hard edge to be found. It represents pure, hedonistic cassis fruit presented in a voluptuous, uncomplex, pure style. Enjoy it over the next 5-7 years." Wine Advocate #143.

1999 Cape Mentelle "Trinders" Cabernet Merlot
"Deep crimson. Intense cassis, mint, chocolate, cedar aromas and herb garden, mocha nuances. Well balanced and concentrated palate with plum, mocha flavours, some violet/herb garden characters and fine slinky tannins. Finishes chalky dry with plenty of fruit sweetness and flavour length. Beautifully proportioned wine with fruit definition and bottle complexity in equilibrium. ***** now - 2012"

Troy Kalleske was kind enough to drop in some samples of his new releases the other day.
WOW!

2004 Kalleske Clarry’s Barossa Red
The average age of the vines used are 50 years old. Don't let the price put you off, this is a great little wine. Drinking well now but would cellar for 5 years. 80% Grenache and 20% Shiraz all from the Kalleske vineyards.

2004 Red Nectar Shiraz
2004 Red Nectar Cabernet
Tammy Pfeiffer is the vigneron, and with her cousin Troy Kalleske they have produced wines which are concentrated, up front fruit with a great balance of oak. True Barossa style wines. Red Nectars wines received 3 Trophies at their first wine show.

03 Wirra Wirra Woodhenge Shiraz

Special Release from Wirra Wirra and ONLY available at The Ed ! (for now!)
“As a tribute to Greg Trott’s unique vision of that which has always made Wirra Wirra special, they have named their McLaren Vale Shiraz after the massive post-and-rail fence only Trott could have dreamed of and that now greets visitors to the winery.
Like the fence, Wirra Wirra Woodhenge McLaren Vale Shiraz 2003 is big, bold and tightly knit. Senior winemaker Samantha Connew explains that the wine reflects the region and grape variety that, like Woodhenge, typifies the individuality of McLaren Vale.”

Two Hands
“ Two Hands, Australia - The finest negociant operation south of the equator, Two Hands is run by the dynamic Michael Twelftree. In a few short years, Twelftree, along with winemaker Matt Wenk, has built this exciting enterprise producing South Australian Shiraz, Grenache, and such curiosities as Riesling, dessert Semillon, and low alcohol Moscato, into an extraordinary success. These fairly priced, brilliant offerings are full of character and personality. Twelftree is one smart guy, realizing what his country of origin does so well – produce full-flavored wines from ripe grapes” Robert Parker’s Wine Personalities of the Year. The Wine Advocate – issue 156

04 Two Hands Angels Share McLaren Vale Shiraz
04 Two Hands Brave Faces Barossa Shiraz Grenache
03 Two Hands Shovel Blanc Barossa Merlot Cabernet Franc
Hopefully the name won't cause any problems!

03 Two Hands Samantha’s Garden Clare Shiraz
“ An elegant style typical of the Clare Valley region. Vibrant purple plum colour, perfumed mulberry & violet with subtle cedar spice and the merest hint of mint on the nose. Tightly woven seamless tannins flow the length of the palate, wrapped in wild berry and forest floor fruit with beautifully balanced cedar spice coming from the oak”

03 Two Hands Sophie’s Garden Padthaway Shiraz
“Purple plum colour. A concentrated aromatic profile showing plenty of spice with hints of clove and pepper. It comes alive on the palate with voluptuous dark purple to black fruits that just keep going, and a tight defined tannin structure.”

  02 Gibson Reserve Merlot
“ A gold medallist at the recent 2004 Barossa Wine Show, this is a deliciously soft, ripe, medium to full-bodied merlot which tastes of raspberry, cherry and vanilla; a bold fruity wine with silky tannin and succulent flavour, subtly underlined by quality oak. Best within three years.” Good Drinking. Huon Hooke. The Sydney Morning Herald Oct 12, 2004

04 Clonakilla Hilltops Shiraz
The first of the Hilltops to carry a Viognier influence – it’s been fermented on Viognier skins. The effect is mesmerizing. There’s a richness here, a silken plumminess, a hint of undergrowth and lots of sweet lift – given time to settle and develop, this will be a fair dinkum cracker. Bound to be one of the top-notch bargains of the year. Drink: Now-2014. 93 points.Campbell Mattinson, WINEFRONT MONTHLY, March 2005

  2004 Mesh Riesling

“ A collaboration between two people who know a lot about Riesling, Jeff Grosset and Robert Hill Smith ... Mesh is a super-fine Eden Valley wine. There are floral and citrus characters, along with the slatey minerality that marks the best. Long, clean and firm, it should age well. Food: chicken with lemongrass.” 5 stars The Age Epicure ( Australia ), March / April 2004

2003 Massena The Moonlight Run
This wine is based around fruit from a 120 yr old bush vine Grenache vineyard in Greenock . Cinsault from 80yr old vines and Mataro from 80yr old vines add some Shiraz and you have a luscious, rich, textured and balanced wine that is drinking superbly but would cellar for 5-7 years.

02 Yangarra Park McLaren Vale Grenache
"Rich, ripe and massive Grenache, redolent of all sorts of dark fruits - plums, blueberries, blackberries - that cascade over the palate like a roaring waterfall. Still, there's enough texture and grace to make it possible to warm up to this thoroughbred, and the finish sails on forever." Best from 2006 through 2012. 600 cases made. – 93 Points H.S., Wine Spectator

02 Yangarra Park Shiraz
"Ripe and distinctive for its gamy, spicy character, a fleshy Shiraz with fine tannins wrapped around the generous berry and licorice flavors at the core. Finishes long." Best from 2006 through 2010. 4200 cases made.– 90 Points H.S., Wine Spectator
"Yangarra is becoming synonymous with excellent wines at fair prices. Nose is a little hot at first but later reveals pastry flour and black pepper aromas. Ripe red plums and vanilla accents unfold in the mouth. Not a huge rich wine, but certainly a classy one." - 90 Points, Editor's Choice Wine Enthusiast

2000 Franklands Estate Olmos Reward
“This one rewrites the books. It's 45 per cent Cabernet Franc, 38 per cent Merlot, 6 percent Petit Verdot, 6 per cent Cabernet, and 5 per cent Malbec. It started the day looking a little surly and closed, but the longer it breathed the more it grew. After six hours, it looked as good as the glorious Bordeaux blends it respectfully emulates. It's named after Professor Harold Olmo, of the University of California, who came to this southern corner of Western Australia in 1955, and predicted it could grow wines like this. Plush, dense and fleshy, it glows with an alluring sexy sheen, and its soft, mellow palate is perfectly harmonious, long and opulent. It's an incredibly satisfying, luxurious wine.” 95 Points Philip White Top 100 Wines.

2003 Thorn Clarke Shotfire Ridge Quartage
AKA Barossa Cuvee
“The inky/ruby/purple-colored 2003 Terra-Barossa Cuvee, an exuberant blend of 60% Shiraz, 33% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Mourvedre, possesses good structure, density, and loads of blackberry and cassis fruit. Some firm tannin still needs to be resolved in the finish, but this offering reveals a Bordeaux-like structure. Give it another 6-12 months of bottle age, and drink it over the next 4-5 years.”

2003 Thorn Clarke Shotfire Ridge Shiraz also available

From The Cellar!

00 Ausvetia Shiraz
Normally not available in Australia but we secured a wee bit of this sensational Shiraz from Penley Estate .
The 2000 vintage has 89% Shiraz and 11% Cabernet with grapes sourced from McLaren Vale (60%), Coonawarra (30%) and 10% Barossa. This is the classic Australian style, big n’ bold yet well balanced.
“Bright red-purple; quite complex dark berry, earth, spice and oak aromas on the bouquet are also reflected in the smooth and balanced palate. Best vintages 2000 & 1998. 90 points” James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2004

98 Hollick Ravenswood Cabernet
Coonawarra is regarded as one of THE area’s for Cabernet.
1998 is regarded as one of the best years in memory in Australia.
How can you go wrong with this wine? You can’t, this is classy Cabernet, blackcurrants, berries, cedary oak all in perfect balance. This is one for the cellar! No ……not ours……YOURS!
“Deep crimson. Intense blackcurrant, juicy fruit aromas with some mocha nuances. Deep-set wine with plenty of fruit sweetness.Blackcurrant comfi / pastille flavours, sweet ripe grainy / lacy tannins, and plenty of mocha oak, lovely concentration and length.” 96 Points Langtons Australian Fine Wine Guide 5th Edition.

What’s New at The Ed?

  Massena Wines

“For the last few years in the Barossa, there’s been an emergence of growers’ own labels, and a bit of a changing of the guard with some new talents being recognised. Having grown up in the Barossa, I’ve been fortunate to watch a lot of my contemporaries all doing really well in the industry now. We’ve been weaned on some good juice, and we’ve had plenty of time and practice to work out what is so good about the Barossa and Eden Valleys ! One particular label has been getting noticed, and we’re proud to be getting right behind it. Two mates of mine, Jaysen Collins & Dan Standish, established Massena in 2000. Rescuing a patch of old vines was the inspiration behind one label; driving together from Clare to home during a vintage gig was another. Going against the grain by sourcing unusual varieties, and having a laugh with a desire to make some great booze has been their inspiration. They both have other senior jobs in the industry, and both have had a lot of experience travelling and working in other roles, to understand what they’re doing now. They’ve certainly got it right with this label.” James March

04 Epsilon Coalsack Shiraz
This is an introduction to the range and what an intro it is.

04 Massena Barbara Dolcetto
Absolutely delicious! The wine is full of vibrant fruit and a great match to food.

03 Massena The Moonlight Run
This is a Grenache, Shiraz , Mataro & Cinsault blend and is wonderfully rich, textured and balanced.

03 Massena The11th Hour Shiraz
“A pre-bottling tank sample of the 2003 Shiraz The 11th Hour (100% Shiraz from 60-year-old vines in the Greenock sector) was aged in primarily old French barrels and small foudres. It smells like a flower garden planted among acres of blueberry fields. A dense ruby/purple colour and the stunning aromatics are followed by an equally complex, elegant, medium to full-bodied Shiraz with fabulous concentration, great balance, and tremendous purity as well as intensity. Drink this distinctive effort over the next 7-8 years. Rating: (94-96)points” Review by Robert Parker Wine Advocate #155 (Oct2004)

2001 Elderton Command Shiraz
They’ve done it again those Ashmead boys!
This is (as usual) the big, bold Barossa style we’ve come to expect. It’s big but balanced, its got the plums, the chocolate and the spice……the spice of Hot Cross buns mixed with the chocolate of those Easter eggs and then add some steroids!
One for the cellar!

2001 Wynns Harold Cabernet Special Release
“Established in 1972, the Wynns Coonawarra Estate Harold Vineyard is a dry grown, nine hectare block, set in the heart of some of the best terra rossa soils in Coonawarra. Planted entirely to cabernet sauvignon, the Harold Vineyard produced such an exceptional crop in 2001. It was decided to release the first bottling of this unique, single vineyard wine to celebrate the 50th vintage of cabernet sauvignon at Wynns Coonawarra Estate.
The resultant wine is an opulent, full-bodied cabernet sauvignon with cassis and cedar wood aromas leading to a generous palate of dark mint chocolate and sage, complemented by 18 months maturation in new French oak. Supple tannins support the deep, long finish to produce a densely structured wine that will reward careful cellaring.”

2004 Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Semillon
“An excellent wine. Grass, lemon, a subtle underplay of toasted richness and a gravely enduring length- it’s in fine form” 92 points. Campbell Mattinson.
Winefront Monthly

2002 Cape Mentelle Trinders Cabernet Merlot
Sweet aromas of blackberries and blueberries. Good flavour profile; more sweet fruit on the palate balanced by a tart acid backbone. Good structure and style.” 4 stars, Winestate March/April 2005

2003 Cape Mentelle Chardonnay
“Another outstanding wine from this top producer. Balanced, smoky, toasty and peach / stone fruit aromas and a clean, fresh palate with lively acidity and lovely grapefruit tang. Oak is in the background. Very Impressive.”
95 points, 100 Top New Releases. Gourmet Traveller Autumn 2005

2002 Leeuwin Estate Art Series Chardonnay
"Given that Australia’s Greatest Chardonnays are far superior to our best Sauvignon Blancs, Semillons and even Rieslings, and that Leeuwin Estate has produced about 8 of our best 12 Chardonnays, it follows that the just released 2002 Art Series Chardonnay is amongst Australia’s greatest 12 white wines – ever...From Invinity's point of view the 2002 Leeuwin Art Series Chardonnay is one of Australia’s greatest white wines ever.
The bouquet is made up of fine, but obvious, very long and crafted stone fruit characters, almost to hints of dried apricots, with orange rind and grapefruit flavours. The length is outstanding by Australian standards.
On the palate, the wine is more opulent than the 1997, 1999 and 2001 releases, but finer than the 2000 blockbuster. This is an Australian style, and it does not have the ‘mealy and minerality’ characters of European chardonnays. It shows round, full, very long, harmonious and opulent fruit characters. The fruit flavours are dense and intense, and envelop and hide the deceptively high structuring acid components. The oak craftsmanship is so fine that you have to focus to be aware of its quality and deft handling.
The superbly balanced mouthfeel and textures cascade satisfyingly over the various parts of the palate and then linger luxuriously – confirming the extraordinary fruit quality from the low crop levels from the long, cool 2002 vintage.
We have yet to see any flavour development, but this is so good, that it just might be, with 1982 and 1995, the greatest ever. 18.9 Points – and it’s going to get better.”John Jens, Invinity, 8th March 2005
  New Label from the Barossa

2002 Eden Hall Cabernet Sauvignon
“An excellent example of a leafy cabernet with big concentration of cassis / blackberry fruit on the nose that follows through to a sweet, fleshy palate. Great oak length and a very nice finish”. 5 stars, Winestate 2005

2002 Eden Hall Shiraz Viognier
"If this is the quality to be expected from this stylish new label then get on board. Stoney, chalky, sweet-fruited and sure, it¹s plumped with a mouthfilling plummy yumminess, backed by a hit of mashed spices, and taken out by perfectly ripe tannins…..
If this carried the label of Torbreck or Henschke, it would sell for double the price. Drink: 2006-2013.”
94 points
WineFront Monthly .
2003 Torzi Matthews ‘Frost Dodger’ Shiraz
Did you hear about Kalleske when it was gone?
When you heard about Greenock Creek, had the creek dried up?
When you realised Mitolo was a winery was it all gone?
We believe this is one of THE new labels of the Barossa, the price is BP (before Parker), it’s an Amarone style from Eden Valley, and it is SENSATIONAL! We’re taking a punt on this wine before everybody jumps on the bandwagon, so don’t say you weren’t told in advance, get into it, anyway you can!
Campbell Mattison reckons, “Deep, dense licorice. Dry and controlled. Like sucking on a black jelly bean dipped in raspberry. Edges of hay and yeast. Ripe. Not overcooked. Simple for now, but silken, and with sleeves of unborn complexity. A lovely wine. This is the work of a fine producer. Drink: Now – 2012. 92 Points”
Winefront Monthly
Click here to view product photo 2001 Seppelts St Peters Shiraz
“By some margin the best wine released under this label to date, this deeply perfumed, intensely flavoured and tightly structured Shiraz is a sure bet for long term cellaring. Scented with violets and cassis, mulberries and vanilla/chocolate oak, it’s so peppery you could sneeze over it. Fine and silky, its pristine expression of nimble berry fruit flavours reveals forest floor-like complexity and light herbal nuances. Wonderful length, balance and harmony”
Jeremy Oliver. Gourmet Traveller Wine. Autumn 2005.

  From The Cellar:

1999 Hamilton Ewell Fullers Barn Shiraz
“ Deep crimson. Deep set and exotic rhubarb/apricot/mulberry aromas and underlying savoury oak. Rich, ripe, succulent wine with deep-set ripe blackberry/apricot fruit flavours, soft ripe tannins, underlying savoury oak and plenty of flavour length. Super wine. 95 Points. Drink 2005-2012” Langton’s Australian Fine Wine Guide 5th edition
“I have encountered 1999 Hamilton ’s Ewell Vineyards Fuller’s Barn Shiraz ($40) on many occasions and my take has been nigh on identical. Excellent colour announces a wine with archetypal ripe (but not overripe) Barossa shiraz fruit (sweet plum, blackberry and mint) joined by chocolate on the palate. A complex, high-quality wine with good oak and integration. To 2015.” James Halliday Weekend Australian October 19th 2002

  1995 Penfolds Grange
”Deep crimson. Scented, herb garden/blackberry/spicy nose. Elegantly structured but well-concentrated wine with blackberry/cedar/spice flavours and ample, fine, but leafy tannins. An earlier drinking Grange. 2006-2020”

2004 Scorpo Pinot Gris

“This is close in style to an Alsatian pinot gris with pear, nut and spice aromas.  While it is full and voluptuous initially, the final impression is savoury and dry.  Try it with pork or veal cutlets.”

Sally Gudgeon, The Age – Sunday Life Magazine, February 13, 2005

2003 Scorpo Shiraz

Extremely limited, only 5 dozen available!

“Scorpo shiraz is all about fragrance, texture and complexity.  It’s earthy, savoury and deeply sexy.”
Sally Gudgeon, Gourmet Traveller Wine, Spring 2004

“A smell-it-all-day wine.  Terrifically scented, with tobacco and rosewater, five-spice and black cherry, earth and cedar rising to greet you.  In the mouth it’s different to expectations: fine, juicy, elegant and attractive, with rounds of cherry, earth, undergrowth, lavender and pepper-spice, and beautifully acidity bones.  Lovely.  Drink: Now – 2012”

Campbell Mattinson, Winefront Monthly, February 2005

Last of the Summer wine?
2004 Castagna Allegro

“Perfect rose. A remarkably delicious drink. Incredibly well scented, with wild fennel and rose petal perfumes dreaming out of the glass before a juicy, savoury, ripe, dry, chalky, fruity palate finishes you off. Fantastic. Drink: Now. 94 points.” Campbell Mattison, Winefront Monthly, December 2004

Important Imported-
2001 Ramos Pinto ‘Duas Quintas’

We tried this wine recently and couldn’t believe it had slipped under the radar! If you like the thought of a European red that is all about balance, savouriness, and will work with food rather than against it, you’ll love this. It’s got a quality the French call ‘la redemande’, that is, the magical wanting of more and always going back for another glass!

“2001 Duas Quintas Made by port producer Ramos Pinto in Portugal's Douro region using grape varieties usually reserved for sweeter vintage ports, this delicious, juicy-but-dry purple wine starts fragrant, full and licorice-like, but finishes with a snappy freshness .”The Wine List by Max Allen, July 3-4, 2004
“This Portuguese red table wine is made by the venerable house of Ramos Pinto, of which Champagne Louis Roederer is now majority shareholder. A blend of wine from two estates ('duas quintas'), the grapes used are, not surprisingly, traditional port varieties. But this is by no means a porty wine, rather a beautifully proportioned, dry, savoury style” 5 Star Wines Gourmet Traveller WINE Magazine, August-September, 2004

Gaja 2000-

‘One thing you can say about Gaja’s wines, however: at least when you hock the house to buy a bottle, you know you are in for a bloody good drink’- Nicolas Belfrage ‘Barolo to Valpolicella’.

Last Stocks:

2002 Cloudy Bay Te Koko Sauvignon Blanc

Yes, its first and last stocks for the Te Koko!

“Released as a matured wine, the 2002 CLOUDY BAY TE KOKO is a richly textured, alternative style of Sauvignon Blanc. Luscious aromas of lychee and almond intermingle with green gooseberry and a trace of wood smoke ... the weighty palate offers a delicious medley of tangy citrus, crème caramel and nougat flavours, and a long, lingering finish.”

2004 Dog Point Sauvignon Blanc

This has been one of our biggest selling Summer Sauvy’s, and we’ve got just a few more… If you wondered why Cloudy Bay started the way it did before it became an allocation only sort of a wine, then consider that the guys behind the label, Ivan Sutherland and James Healy, were the former chief viticulturist and head winemaker at New Zealand's Cloudy Bay.
“Rarely does a new wine label spring up with such an impressive range of wines across the board...There's no doubt we are seeing the birth of a new star in Kiwiland” is what Huon Hooke of the Sydney Morning Herald had to say. This is the sort of wine that got the world hooked on Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc.

2004 Chalk Hill “The Procrastinator” Red
(No, it’s not called after us!)

Cellar Dweller January 2005

G’day,

Where have they been? I hear you say.

The list of excuses (especially from Jimmy!) is long and distinguished, but January is the month for the inaugural issue of that Journal of Vinous Enlightenment for the Incurable Wine Connoisseur, “Cellar Dweller”, with the new EDitors.

Comings & Goings at ‘The Ed’:

First the goings:
Sarah Hutton has left the building!
Sarah has decided to get away from the city and head off to the Vale. She now holds the position of Cellar Door Manager @ Wirra Wirra in McLaren Vale…….all the best Sar’s and have a great time!

2004…..yup it’s gone!

The comings:

2005….yup it’s here!

And the new Editors, James and Declan are now officially responsible for steering the Good Ship Edinburgh along a stormy course in the sea of ‘beer, wine and spirits’ bringing you safely back to a harbour of good wine!

We’re also hopefully going to be bringing you “Cellar Dweller” twice monthly… we said “hopefully”, with all the news of wines coming across our desks, tastings, events, and news in the world of wine.

Staving off the silly notion of detoxification for the New Year, suggestions of a few ‘specials’ to help-

Stickleback Wines
The ubiquitous Ben Glaetzer strikes again. Max Allen’s pick as the emerging value wine brand of 2004/2005
The Red

“A lively blend of cabernet sauvignon, shiraz and grenache, it’s full of big, chewy, ripe black cherry fruit and bright tannin. Exceptional value.”

The White

“This blend of semillon, chardonnay and verdelho is bursting with fresh white grape pulp flavours, is ripe and mouthfilling, but it also has a tang of lemon and lime curd to it. Great debut label from young gun wine-maker Ben Glaetzer.”
